We’re big on bright and big spaces here at Ovvy! There is just something beautiful, warm and welcoming about such spaces. If you’ve got rooms in your house that could use a little help to look brighter – fret not, you don’t need to renovate to install new windows! Here are a few quick tricks that can make your space look and feel sunnier in just a few minutes.
- Use mirrors to decorate your room, increase the amount of sunlight in your room by bouncing light off reflective surfaces. You could consider hanging a mirror (ornate or simple, depending on your house decor to match it) directly across from a large window.
- If you live in a house where trees block the windows, light cannot reach inside your home! Make sure any bushes or trees in front of your windows are trimmed regularly to let the light in.
- When choosing decorative elements for your room, choose matte surfaces over glossy. We know, you would think that glossy surfaces would be better, but they actually create glare. Next time, think matte!
- Clean your windows regularly. Here is our post on how to get those windows spotless and sparkly. The less dirt, dust and splatters on the the windows, the more sunshine you will see inside your room!
- Think about appropriate light fixtures for your room. The New York Times says that indirect lighting aimed towards the ceiling can supplement daylight well.
- Save the darker artwork and posters for the brighter rooms, these tend to absorb light and dull the room they’re in. So if the room you hang them up in is not naturally very bright, it might make the room look even more dull!
- Use white or lighter neutral colour schemes to decorate the room. Light colours naturally reflect more light, and make the room brighter!
- Opt to use translucent light curtains that allow sunshine to enter, and beautifully diffuse the light entering. Try to avoid the heavy and dark curtains.
